Just over an hour from Stonethrow Fishing Lodge is a cave of geological and historic importance.
Take a guided walk and boat ride through the cave to see New Zealands’ unique Arachnocampa luminosa, thousands of luminescent tiny creatures.
Stonethrow Fishing Lodge can also show you our impressive local glow worms only a 10 minute drive away.
Blazing Paddles Canoe Adventures
Right next door to Stonethrow Fishing Lodge, no driving required. Explore the magnificent Whanganui River at your own pace.

If speed is more your style, enjoy a trip down the magnificent Whanganui River by jet boat.

Stop and enjoy some of the attractions along the river, Laurens’ Lavender Farm, Ercegs Museum and the Ohura Falls and Nui poles.
Hiking/Tramping
Amongst the breathtaking scenery of the central North Island are many walks to suit all levels of fitness and are within a 10 to 45 minute drive away from Stonethrow Fishing Lodge. Try an easy morning walk through scenic bush, crossing a fabulous hidden lagoon at Ohinetonga Reserve, or around a picturesque lake surrounded by native bush at lake Rotopaunamu.
For those with more time available is the Tongariro crossing, an amazing hike enjoyed by people from all over the world.
National Army Museum Waiouru
Discover New Zealands’ military history. The museum has a comprehensive collection of weapons, medals, iconic military vehicles and life like displays.
The Tears on Greenstone Memorial is a wonderful tribute to our fallen soldiers. Situated at the Waiouru Army base this museum is the best in the southern hemisphere, and only a one hour drive away.
Taumarunui Golf Course
Taumarunui’s Golf Course, ‘Tarrangower’, dates back to the early 1920’s and has developed into a most attractive all weather Course featuring 18 holes of undulating fairways of park like appearance.
Only a 10 minute drive away from Stonethrow Fishing Lodge. This is a fantastic rural golf course voted the best in New Zealand in 1994 and still rated amongst the top courses in the country.
National Park Indoor Climbing Wall
For those wet days, try the climbing wall at National Park. A beautiful 15 minute drive away from Stonethrow Fishing Lodge.
With 55 different climbs and over 300 square metres of climbing wall, 8 metres high. There are 35 top ropes and 55 different climbs available to the very keen.
Suitable for beginners right up to the more daring and advanced climbers. Full instruction and supervision provided. Open everyday from 9am to 9pm.
