Our season this year although starting late due to inclement weather has shown signs of being fantastic with the quality and numbers being very high. This could well be due to amount of rain we had during October as we know rain delivers food to our scaly friends who need it badly after the spawning season.
The weather now has settled and the rivers have once more found their average levels and the fish are a little easier to find. The evening rise started early in our home pool this year and there were a few easy fish there for a while taking pretty much any well presented fly but as these fish learn that all is not what it seems things get trickier and the challenge increases.
While on the river this year I have observed a lot of fisherman releasing fish which is very encouraging and great for the fish but some of the fish are out of the water for a long time while the enevitable struggle to find the camera goes on this can burn the fish due to dry hands or bad handling.

I never realised how delicate fish were until we started guiding and catching the same fish repeatedly and saw some handling damage first hand, then the penny dropped.
We now carry forceps for releasing most fish without handling and explain to clients why to date all have been supportive.
