A Fly Fishing Vacation to Remember

GREETINGS FROM STONETHROW FLY FISHING LODGE!

Jim Romig on the Tongariro River18 December 2009

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season.

Here on the river the fly fishing season has started out very, very rainy with lots of unsettled weather making the fly fishing a bit difficult. But now as we approach Christmas the weather has finally calmed down and there have even been reports of sunshine about. As the weather has improved so has the fishing and several parties have had excellent days on the river. The trout appear to be in a little better condition than they were at this time last year and if the activity of the evening rise is any indication they are putting on weight fast. The rainbow trout in particular are in great shape.

We just had four Americans back for another 10 day charter, they ticked all the boxes and included heli fishing, wilderness, quad bike dry fly and nymph fishing all of which produced fantastic flyfishing and a fishing trip they will talk about for a long time.

The brown trout that live in front of the house have returned to their usual lies and are still offering a challenge in the evening after a days fishing. The record for an evening catch is eight, by an American staying here last year, so they can be caught. The settled weather has gotten the mayfly hatches going in the evening and as I look out tonight on the river I can see quite a bit of activity. Mostly quiet rises but occaisionally a splashy one as a trout refuses to let a tasty morsel get away.

We are filling up fast for January and February so if you are thinking of booking a trip do not wait to give us a call.

We hope to see you soon.
